National Language Proficiency Test (YKI)
The National Certificate of Language Proficiency (YKI) is a standardized language test organized by the Finnish National Agency for Education. It is intended for adults and assesses language skills in everyday, practical situations using standard language. With a YKI certificate, you can officially demonstrate your language proficiency in various languages.
The exam consists of four parts:
- Speaking
- Listening comprehension
- Writing
- Reading comprehension
- Each section is assessed separately.
The YKI certificate can be used, for example, to:
- Apply for jobs or education
- Apply for Finnish citizenship (applies to exams in Finnish or Swedish)
- Demonstrate your language level to an employer
- The YKI exam is held twice a year on Åland.
If you are applying for Finnish citizenship, you should choose the intermediate level.
Medis offers a preparatory course for the National Certificate of Language Proficiency every term. The course provides practice in all four parts of the exam and is ideal for those who want to feel more confident before taking the test.
The next course will be offered in the Fall and registration will open on August 12th.
The next test session is on November 14, 2026. Registration is open from September 28 to October 29, 2026.
